ASSOCIATE COSTUME DESIGNER
JOB DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Associate Costume Designer is a key member of Studio Tenn Theatre Company’s artistic and production teams, working directly with Costume Designer and Costume Shop Manager to design and create costume pieces for all productions. This position will also work extensively with makeup and hair design, and will serve on wardrobe team for select productions. In addition to strong organizational and communication skills, the person in this position should have a passion for creating one-of-a-kind costumes that redefine what it means to be a regional theatre, and a desire to become a member of an exciting, quickly-growing company.

Reports To: Artistic Director, Costume Shop Manager    
Direct Reports: Costume Shop Personnel, Wardrobe Crew

Position Summary: The Associate Costume Designer is a key member of Studio Tenn Theatre Company’s artistic and production teams, working directly with Costume Designer and Costume Shop Manager to design and create costume pieces for all productions. This position will also work extensively with makeup and hair design, and will serve on wardrobe team for select productions. In addition to strong organizational and communication skills, the person in this position should have a passion for creating one-of-a-kind costumes that redefine what it means to be a regional theatre, and a desire to become a member of an exciting, quickly-growing company.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Designers for the planning, execution and completion of all built, pulled and purchased costumes for productions, while adhering to budget and schedule deadlines

  • Work with Artistic Director/Costume Designer to design costume pieces as needed

  • Work with Costume Shop Manager to create costumes, fabricating patterns by draping or flat-patterning, cutting, stitching, altering, dyeing, and shopping

  • Help to ensure timely delivery of all costume elements, introducing costume pieces and rehearsal costumes into the rehearsal process as needed

  • Work with Costume Shop Manager and production to determine backstage layout, manage wardrobe crew schedules, develop show paperwork and serve on wardrobe crew as needed

  • Work with Costume Shop Manager to maintain costume pieces through run of productions, and assist with strike, cleaning, and re-stocking of all costumes post-show

  • Oversee maintenance of hair and makeup supplies, fabrics and materials

  • Maintain a safe, healthy, clean and organized workshop environment

Work Requirements and Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 2-3 years of experience in costume construction and wardrobe supervision

  • Extensive knowledge of costume construction techniques and fabrics is required

  • Must have a strong comprehension of hair and makeup design, including wig design and maintenance; experience in wig ventilating is preferred

  • Experience managing and tracking production budgets/expenses

  • Ability to manage crews with various skill sets

  • Possess a valid Driver’s License

  • Ability to work long hours and work with a flexible schedule, including early morning, evening and weekend hours as needed

  • Ability to work safely in an environment containing potentially hazardous equipment, fumes, vapor, gasses and/or materials

  • Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry up to 50 pounds

  • Must be able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to, lifting, bending, standing, climbing and/or walking
